Seniors doesn't mean you have to be over a certain age to play, just that most of us no longer qualify to play juniors. However, many junior players also play in the senior tennis competition for additional practice and to play with and against more experienced players. There's two seasons, a summer and winter season, each of which has several competitions to play in. In summer, you can play in the regular mens/womens competition, or the mixed doubles competition. In the winter, you can play in the regular competition, or the doubles competition. SummerThe summer season starts at the beginning of the 4th school term, around October, continues close to Christmas, resumes mid to late January and finishes a few weeks before Easter. During this time, the Hallett Cove Beach Tennis Club is part of the Glenelg District Tennis Association. Regular competitionThis compeition consists of 4 players of the same sex. Each player plays a best of 3 sets doubles and single set singles. Playing time is either 12:30 to 3:30 or 3:30 to 6:30. Unfortunately, you won't know what times you'll play on what day until the program is released at the start of the season, but since you'll only be out for 3 hours, you'll have plenty of time do other things before and after tennis. Mixed doublesThe mixed doubles competition consists of 4 men and 4 women, each of which plays a best of 3 sets regular doubles followed by a single "super set" (first to 9 games, rather than 6) mixed doubles. The matches start at 1 and typically finish between 4 and 6, depending on how long all the matches take (and if you have more than the 2 allocated courts to play on). Although taking longer than the regular competition, it's a great opportunity to meet or make friends and have a great time with plenty of off-court time to chat with your team mates and opposition. WinterDuring the winter, Tennis SA is the competition organiser. Teams in division 6 and below (or is that higher? division numbers larger than 6) typically play against other clubs that area in the Glelelg District during summer, although it's not uncommon to play against teams that are a little further away. People playing in divisions 1 to 5 often have to travel further to play against opponents of similar ability. One unfortunate year, one of our teams had to play against Tea Tree Gully, Salisbury, two Memorial Drive teams and Seacliff. The previous year the furthest they had to travel was Memorial Drive, so the distance you'll have to travel depends on the luck of the year. Regular competitionBest of 3 set doubles, best of 3 set singles. Best way to get fit playing tennis. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to have 4 quick sets, or maybe you'll have a tough 6 set afternoon. Doubles3 matches of 2 set doubles. Yes, if it's 1 set all, you stop playing. Although you always play 6 sets, since it's all doubles it feels like less running than playing in the regular season, even though you may only play 4 sets there, which is great for the less energetic people out there. Unfortunatly, starting at 1 you probably won't get a lot of rest between matches if you want to finish before it gets dark (unless you're lucky enough to have a short match, while your next doubles partner has a long match). |
